Sea animals have been a major source of amusement and awe for many generations. Every time someone sees something new it creates a great deal of wonder in them that just incites their curiosity more than usual. One of the lesser known aquatic animals on the planet is the giant squid. It is believed that the sighting of one of these is what prompted the mythological monster, the Kraken. The giant squid is huge but has a larger cousin called the colossal squid. It is even larger but has basically the same body. They have been witnessed up to sixty feet long. Each of their eight arms make up the largest amount of their body length then there are two extra tentacles more.

Another one of the fabulous marine animals that is not seen much is the lantern fish. They are called this because they produce their own light. A small piece on their fin, their head and on their belly work by mixing chemicals in these places to produce light. It is thought that they use this to attract mates or perhaps prey. In this case, curiosity is truly not the best idea.

An Atlantic hagfish is also not very well known. They are long and slimy and look quite a bit like a long tongue. Because their entire body is capable of creating slime that is difficult to wash off scientists believe that they exude this substance as a defense mechanism against predators. The consistency of the slime is thought to clog the predators gills with it disabling if not killing them.

A snipe eel is another unheard of sea creatures in the oceans. The longest found and recorded was five feet long. They have over 750 vertebrae in their bodies. This is the most of any animal, sea or land, in the world. They are long and thin with an elongated beak that does not close when their jaw comes together. Their mouth has lots of hooked teeth that help them to capture their food. It is also thought that they swim with their mouths open to make fishing easier too.
